Morocco rises two spots to the 6th place in the global Climate Change Performance Index 2026. The North African Kingdom continues to be listed among the top performers in the world. This year it stands just behind UK (5th) and Denmark (4). The first three spots remain vacant, as no country achieved an overall very high rating.
Morocco continues to be a champion in Africa and the Arab world in the fight against climate change. In the CCPI 2026, the country received a high rating (70.8) in GHG Emissions, Energy Use, and Climate Policy, and a low rating in Renewable Energy.
Morocco updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in September 2025, setting a 53% reduction target for 2035 compared with a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. The total reduction target consists of an unconditional reduction target of 21.6% reduction and a conditional target of 31.4%. The CCPI experts welcome the government’s plan to phase out coal by 2040.
Major public transport and rail investments in Morocco are supporting a modal shift and long-term low-carbon mobility. CCPI experts call for incentives for citizen involvement, and accelerating renewable energy expansion in the country.
The CCPI looks at four categories, with 14 indicators: Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use, and Climate Policy. The CCPI evaluates countries’ progress in implementing policies working towards achieving the Paris Agreement goals seeking to limit global warming to 1.5°C by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for climate change.
