Sudan: Women’s Groups Urge Global Action Over Conflict-Related Abuses

Sudanese women’s organizations have called for urgent international funding and accountability measures to protect women and girls affected by the country’s ongoing conflict.

In a memorandum addressed on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, to regional and global bodies, the groups urged immediate support for victims of violence, as well as food assistance for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Citing figures from the World Health Organization released on February 4, the memorandum noted that 8.1 million women and girls of reproductive age require urgent health services. This includes more than 803,000 pregnant women, with an estimated 1.1 million births expected in 2026. The coalition, comprising the Women’s Union and 43 other organizations, demanded increased funding for medical and psychological care, safe houses, and economic reintegration programs.

The groups further pressed for international accountability, urging that crimes committed since the outbreak of war in April 2023 be referred to global justice mechanisms.

They called for the recognition of alleged atrocities — including murder, rape, sexual slavery, forced marriage and displacement — as war crimes under the Geneva Conventions and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute. The memorandum also advocated targeted sanctions against individuals responsible for sexual violence and starvation tactics.

Beyond humanitarian relief, the organizations appealed for sustained political, diplomatic and economic pressure to secure an immediate ceasefire and guarantee aid access. They emphasized the need to place women’s rights at the centre of any future political transition and proposed that March 8, International Women’s Day, be recognized globally as a day of solidarity with Sudanese women in pursuit of justice and an end to impunity.
