Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi Killed in Zintan, Body Released to Tribe as Probe Continues

Libya’s Office of the Attorney General announced that the body of Saif Al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi had been handed over to members of his tribe at the request of his family, following the completion of required legal procedures.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Attorney General’s Office confirmed that Saif Al-Islam was killed after being shot, adding that investigators were immediately dispatched to the scene. Evidence was collected, experts appointed, witnesses questioned and statements taken as part of an ongoing preliminary investigation. Authorities said efforts are continuing to identify suspects and complete procedures for public prosecution.

Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi was assassinated on Tuesday at a rest house he reportedly frequented in Zintan, where unidentified gunmen allegedly disabled surveillance cameras before opening fire in his bedroom. While initial reports linked the attack to the 444 Brigade, the group has publicly denied any involvement.

His French lawyer, Marcel Ceccaldi, told Agence France-Presse that Saif Al-Islam was killed by a four-man commando unit, noting that security concerns had been raised roughly ten days prior to the incident. Saif Al-Islam’s political team described the killing as a targeted assassination and vowed to pursue accountability for all those involved in planning and executing the attack.
