Water Security Is an Existential Pillar of Egypt’s National Security – President

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has reiterated that Egypt’s water security is a matter of existential importance, directly intertwined with the country’s national security. Speaking on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, during a meeting in Cairo with US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos, El-Sisi stressed that safeguarding water resources remains a top strategic priority for Egypt. The talks, according to the Egyptian presidency, also addressed key regional developments, particularly the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

El-Sisi praised US President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war in Sudan and reaffirmed Egypt’s firm support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, warning that any attempt to undermine the country’s stability would pose a direct threat to Egypt’s own national security. Both sides underscored the need to reduce regional tensions and pursue political solutions to ongoing crises across the region.

Discussions further covered Egypt-US strategic relations, with El-Sisi highlighting the importance of building on current momentum to deepen cooperation in political, economic and security spheres, including preparations for the second Egyptian-American Economic Forum in 2026.
