Egypt calls for full Gaza withdrawal and regional de-escalation in call with UN chief

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Thursday called for the immediate transition to the second phase of the US peace plan during a phone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Abdelatty pressed for a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the establishment of a technocratic committee to administer the territory, and the deployment of an international stabilization force to oversee the transition. He underscored that any post-war framework must prioritize the swift delivery of humanitarian aid and lay the groundwork for early recovery and reconstruction. Israel, however, has delayed moving to the agreement’s second phase, which analysts say reflects an attempt to shape outcomes on its own terms.

The discussions also covered Sudan, where Abdelatty advocated a humanitarian truce leading to a comprehensive ceasefire, condemned serious violations against civilians in El-Fasher and North Kordofan, and stressed the importance of safeguarding Sudan’s sovereignty and ensuring unhindered aid access.

On Yemen, the Egyptian minister reaffirmed Cairo’s support for the country’s unity and national institutions, calling for de-escalation and a Yemeni-led political settlement. He also condemned Israel’s unilateral recognition of Somaliland as a breach of Somalia’s sovereignty and international law, warning of its broader security implications. Guterres, in turn, praised President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s role in promoting regional stability and commended Egypt’s commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and international peace and security.
