Sahara: Rabat & Washington speeding up joint diplomatic coordination & cooperation

Morocco and the United States are stepping up diplomatic coordination and concertation, building on the latest historic UN Security Council resolution endorsing the Moroccan autonomy in the Sahara under the Kingdom’s sovereignty.

Foreign minister Nasser Bourita received in Rabat new U.S. ambassador to Morocco Richard Duke Buchan III who presented copies of his credentials to the minister, one day after his arrival in the Kingdom, showing the two countries’ determination to speed up joint diplomatic actions and coordination on strategic issues.

In a post on his X account, the American ambassador stated he is looking forward to deepening the strong ties between Morocco and the United States and celebrating 250 years of friendship.

He also thanked Bourita for his warm welcome during his first visit to the Moroccan foreign ministry as Ambassador. “We had an excellent discussion about how we can strengthen the already strong ties between Morocco and the United States”, he said.

During his senate confirmation hearing, Buchan had pledged to strengthen further U.S.-Moroccan strategic partnership in security, economy, technology, transportation, agriculture, and energy sectors.

He also described King Mohammed VI as “a valued leader and a friend of the United States”, affirming that Morocco is a pillar of stability and pivotal to American national security.
