Morocco unseats Spain to become third-largest global tomato exporter

Morocco has officially overtaken Spain to become the world’s third-largest exporter of fresh tomatoes, marking a major shift in global agricultural trade, according to UN COMTRADE data cited by Hortoinfo.

Morocco exported 767,000 tons of tomatoes in 2024, surpassing Spain’s 638,000 tons and Turkey’s 492,000 tons, the source said.

This rise reflects a dramatic transformation over the past two decades, it said, noting that in 2005, Morocco exported just 217,000 tons, ranking fifth globally.

Today, it trails only Mexico and the Netherlands in export volume.

In 2024, Morocco’s tomato exports generated €1.066 billion in revenue, overtaking Spain’s €1.015 billion and placing third worldwide in export value. This represents nearly a ten-fold increase from the €113 million recorded in 2005.
