Massad Boulos, Special Advisor to the U.S. President for Arab and African Affairs, reaffirmed Washington’s steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, declaring the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only viable framework for resolving the Western Sahara dispute.
His remarks once more dissipate the propaganda of the Algerian regime which was unable to swallow the setback it suffered when the UN Security Council adopted a resolution considering the autonomy plan both as the framework and the result of talks.
Following his meeting in Cairo with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Boulos emphasized on social
media that the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty remains “the sole foundation for a just and lasting solution” to the regional conflict.
He also reiterated the shared commitment between the United States and the Arab League to peace and stability across the region.
UN Security Council resolution 2797, backed by the United States and supported by 11 member states, renews the mandate of MINURSO and urges all parties- including Algeria-to engage in negotiations without preconditions.
The US administration has said that peace is possible this year in the region and urged all parties to come to the negotiations table.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s advisor, had earlier said his country expects a peace deal between Morocco and Algeria soon.
