IAEA: Morocco pledges to share its nuclear applications expertise with African countries
Morocco has pledged to share its expertise in nuclear applications with African member countries of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Nuclear technology has numerous applications in medicine, agriculture, industry, and consumer products. It uses radioisotopes and radiation in cancer treatment, food irradiation, sterilization, material modification, and environmental monitoring.
In full cooperation with IAEA, Morocco remains committed to strengthening the national capacities of African countries, said Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, during a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors.
“Morocco reiterates ongoing commitment to sharing its experience with African countries, both bilaterally or in cooperation with the IAEA, with the purpose of promoting scientific research and the peaceful use of nuclear science, technology and applications,” the diplomat said.
This year, hundreds of African experts have benefited from Moroccan scholarships and scientific academic trainings, said the ambassador. In 2024, experts from 40 IAEA African member countries benefited from advanced training in Morocco on various nuclear applications within the frame of south-south cooperation.
Nuclear applications can help African countries address food insecurity, and access advanced healthcare through regional collaboration and capacity building of experts in nuclear medicine and cancer treatment.
They can also help African farmer produce climate-resilient crops, improve livestock and management of water resources and soil.
