U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson has introduced the legislation designating the Algeria-backed Polisario militias as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, hammering all supporters of the separatist group.
“The Polisario is a Marxist militia backed by Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia providing Iran a strategic outpost in Africa and destabilizing the Kingdom of Morocco, a U.S. ally for 248 years,’’ said on Thursday the Republican Representative in his X account.
“Grateful to introduce bipartisan legislation with Democrat Representative Jimmy Panetta to designate the Polisario a foreign terrorist organization,” added Mr. Wilson.
Leading experts and politicians from the United States, UK, France, Latin American and European Parliaments and the Arab world had called on the Trump administration to include the Polisario in the terror black list for seeking to destabilize Morocco, one of the United States’ and Europe’s most trusted partners in Africa.
Several influential think-tanks including the American Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) and the Hudson Institute published reports setting the legal grounds for branding the Polisario separatist group a terrorist organization.
According to some analysts, the Polisario designation FTO is inevitable and the nightmare scenario for the Algerian regime is becoming slowly but surely a reality.
