Labor MP Fabian Hamilton: Morocco, UK’s vital security partner & reliable ally
Morocco is a vital partner of UK in the fight against terrorism and people trafficking. The North African Kingdom is also a reliable and resourceful ally, said Labor MP Fabian Hamilton in an Op-Ed published Friday in news website “Politics.co.uk”.
Rabat and London have already strong ties. A million British tourists are expected to visit the country this year, and educational partnerships between the two countries are growing rapidly.
“Not only is our partnership important to the security of North Africa and the wider region; following the foreign secretary’s David Lammy visit last week, it has real life, positive consequences for the British people,” said the co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Morocco.
The current UK Labor government has reset economic and trading relationship with Morocco after over a decade of neglect under the previous government, he said, lauding this reset as “pragmatic and common-sense approach” that will advance a relationship already worth over £4 billion in trade annually and will unlock opportunities for both British and Moroccan businesses.
UK Export Finance has committed a further £5 billion to support new business in Morocco. UK businesses will be first in the queue to build critical infrastructure for the 2030 World Cup.
According to Hamilton, Britain’s world-renowned pharmaceuticals industry will benefit from the £2 billion transformation of Morocco’s national healthcare system, which will open the door for trade with our leading pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and medical technology sector.
The renewed UK foreign policy is built on conflict prevention and economic growth, said the Labor MP. “As co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Morocco, I know that our partnership with Morocco, and its people, must not end there. That’s why foreign secretary David Lammy has made the decision to recognize the Autonomy Plan as the most credible basis for resolving the decades-long dispute over the Sahara”, said Mr. Hamilton
The UK joins allies such as the United States, France and Spain in recognizing the Autonomy Plan as a pivotal development in the history of this frozen conflict, said the British MP for Leeds North East.
