Libya: New cross-border public transport project to boost regional connectivity

A new international public transport initiative has been announced by Libya’s Government of National Unity, with the project designed to modernize domestic road travel and strengthen cross-border connectivity.
Unveiled through a joint effort by the Ministries of Interior and Transport, the plan is aimed at providing secure, comfortable, and efficient bus services linking Libya to its neighboring countries. Operations are to be handled initially by two transport providers, Al-Mada and Al-Sahm.

As outlined by the government, streamlined border procedures are to be introduced in the first phase of the initiative. Dedicated fast-track lanes at land crossings will be used to facilitate border checks, significantly reducing delays for travelers. Similar support will be extended to returnees, with coordinated reception services arranged from border entry points to final destinations within Libya. The project forms part of a wider national transport strategy intended to improve land infrastructure and promote collective public travel as a safer and more structured alternative to private vehicles.

Implementation mechanisms have already been discussed in a high-level coordination meeting involving senior officials from the ministries, including border security and transport authorities, as well as representatives from customs and immigration services at the Ras Jdir crossing. Further technical discussions have been scheduled for next Monday at Ras Jdir to determine final operational protocols and to confirm the official launch timeline.
