Moroccan Observatory Launches the Middle East and North Africa Journal on Violence and Extremism (MENAVEX)

The first issue of the Middle East and North Africa Journal on Violence and Extremism (MENAVEX) has been officially released. This marks the launch of the region’s first peer-reviewed scientific journal dedicated exclusively to the study of extremism and terrorism. Published in both print and electronic formats, the journal is supported by a distinguished scientific and advisory board composed of renowned experts from various countries around the world.

This initiative is grounded in the belief that knowledge plays a central role in the fight against violent extremism. A comprehensive understanding of radicalization processes—its causes, manifestations, and consequences—enables the development of effective, proactive, and sustainable responses to the growing international threats posed by extremism.

The journal aims to serve as an interdisciplinary platform for dialogue and the exchange of knowledge on violent extremism and related phenomena. By combining academic rigor with practical perspectives, it seeks to bridge the gap between research and real-world application, contributing meaningfully to both national and global efforts to counter extremism in all its forms.

The first issue addresses a wide range of topics reflecting the complex and multifaceted nature of violent extremism. These include the evolution of right-wing extremism and the use of manifestos as tools for radicalization since the 1960s, as well as the impact of technological innovation on the spread of far-right ideologies. It also explores lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic in the realm of counterterrorism, the dynamics of radicalization within prisons in Bangladesh, and the challenges of addressing Islamophobia through inclusive and constructive approaches. Additional contributions examine the role of religious narratives in promoting peace and social inclusion, the reproduction of extremism in digital environments, and strategies for reintegrating women returning from conflict zones.

These academic contributions offer diverse and in-depth insights into the challenges posed by violent extremism, providing valuable analysis for policymakers, scholars, and field practitioners alike.

As stated in its editorial, the launch of this publication represents a critical step toward enhancing the scientific understanding of violent extremism and developing innovative strategies to address it. The journal has committed to a biannual publication schedule, ensuring the continuity and sustainability of its mission in support of global counter-extremism efforts.

Furthermore, the editorial highlights the journal’s openness to contributions from researchers worldwide, with a particular encouragement to Moroccan scholars to enrich the international academic discourse on extremism and deepen the understanding of its evolving dynamics and dimensions—ultimately in pursuit of a safer and more stable world.
