American Jewish Committee: Trump Administration determined to end Sahara issue in favor of Morocco

The American Jewish Committee has affirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump is determined to bring final closure to the Sahara issue in favor of Morocco on the basis of the autonomy plan as the ONLY solution of this regional conflict.

In an interview published Monday by Arabic Assabah daily, Jason Isaacson, Chief Political Officer of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), said: the world, particularly in North Africa and the Middle East, is rocked by instability, unrest, and wars, noting that in this region, the United States has a strong ally and longstanding strategic partner.

Although the previous Biden Administration has maintained U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, it did not move this issue forward but the current Trump administration is determined to move towards resolving definitely this issue in favor of Morocco, said Jason Isaacson, affirming that the American Jewish Committee supports Trump’s firm determination to put an end to this conflict threatening regional peace and stability.

Commenting the recent visit of Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to Washington, Mr. Jason Isaacson said Morocco’s top diplomat was the first foreign minister from the Arab world, North African, and African continent to visit the United States and meet with the new U.S. administration.

This sends a strong message to the region, said the AJC official, hailing the strong ties existing between Morocco and the United States to celebrate in 2027 the 250th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

He also lauded the statements made during this visit, reaffirming U.S. steadfast support for Morocco’s autonomy plan under the Kingdom’s sovereignty as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the Sahara dispute.

The AJC remarks come ahead of the Security Council closed consultations on the MINURSO. Members of the Council are expected to receive a briefings from MINURSO Chief Alexander Ivanko, and UN Sahara envoy Staffan de Mistura.

According to intelligence reports, the Algeria-backed armed militias of polisario attacked on April 6th a MINURSO patrolling unit in a deliberate act of escalation seeking to destabilize the region. The Security Council should respond with firmness to this provocative aggression, carried out by the Polisario in connivance with Algerian junta, and hold them accountable for their hostile acts.

In an Op-Ed published lately by the American Enterprise Institute, Michael Rubin called for eliminating failed peacekeeping missions such as the MINURSO, established in 1991.

The U.S. recognizes the Moroccanness of the Sahara and subsidizing that organization represents a betrayal of the Abraham Accords, he stressed, noting that after 34 years and billions of dollars spent, no progress has been made and the UN-led political process is stalled due to the disengagement and procrastination of Algeria and the Polisario.
