Washington Post Confirms Algeria-Iran-Polisario Nexus
The Washington Post has confirmed the alarming ties existing between the Algerian regime and Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, which has trained Polisario militias to guerrilla tactics in order to undermine Morocco’s stability and territorial integrity.
In a story titled: “Syria seeks to sever Iran-linked networks for smuggling arms and cash”, the prestigious American newspaper said after ousting Assad dictatorship, Syria’s new rulers have been stamping out the “land bridge” that Iran used to project regional power by arming Hezbollah and other allies.
“Over the years, Iran has fostered a wide array of proxy groups to advance its interests,” said the Post, quoting credible sources affirming that Iran trained fighters from the “Algeria-based Polisario Front” that are now detained by Syria’s new security forces.
Following the collapse of Assad regime, Syrian TV and international news outlet Monte Carlo said Syria’s new ruler Ahmed Al-Sharaa declined Algeria’s request to release some 500 soldiers including a senior official and members of the Polisario separatist militias captured in Syria as they were fighting with Bachar Assad troops against Syrian rebels.
Al-Sharaa said the detained fighters will stand trial with other armed men who backed Bashar’s bloody war against the Syrian people. Algeria has been a fervent supporter of Bashar in international and Arab fora as well as on the ground sending soldiers and arms.
In 2018, Rabat severed its diplomatic ties with Teheran over the military support provided by Iran and its Hezbollah proxy for the Algeria-backed Polisario separatists.
The U.S. State Department denounces the destabilizing activities led by Iran, including its support for the Lebanese Chiite Hezbollah movement and other terrorist groups. Iran has been designated a State Sponsor of Terrorism by the United States since 1984. Hezbollah is also labelled terrorist organization. Teheran’s use of proxy groups has fueled conflicts, and posed a serious challenge to global peace and security.
