Egypt’s men’s sabre team achieved a historic victory, clinching their first-ever gold medal at the World Cup after defeating the hosts, Hungary, in Budapest on Sunday March 30. The Pharaohs’ squad, consisting of Ziad Elsissy, Mohamed Amer, Adham Moataz, and Mazen El-Araby, triumphed with a 45-37 win over Hungary, marking a remarkable achievement for Egyptian fencing.
The team’s journey to the gold medal was nothing short of impressive. They started their campaign with a dominant 45-30 win over Bulgaria in the round of 32, followed by a 45-38 victory against Romania in the last 16. In the quarter-finals, Egypt stunned the 2024 Olympic gold medalists, South Korea, with a narrow 45-42 win, before pulling off another thrilling performance to defeat France 45-43 in the semi-final.
Egypt ultimately topped the final rankings with 64 points, leaving Hungary in second place with 52 points. This victory not only secured a historic gold medal for Egypt but also solidified the team’s place as one of the world’s fencing powerhouses.
