US Congressmen introduce resolution celebrating 250 years of Moroccan-American alliance
A resolution has been introduced to the Congress recognizing the centuries-old alliance between Morocco and the United States.
The text, submitted by Congressman Brad Schneider to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, highlights “the longstanding friendship” between the two countries, which prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2027.
The resolution commends Morocco’s engagement to promote religious coexistence, its regional diplomacy, including its participation in the Abraham Accords, and encourages the United States to deepen cooperation with Morocco in trade, security, digital transformation, and humanitarian efforts, recognizing both shared opportunities and challenges in the partnership.
The resolution celebrates Morocco as the first country to recognize the independence of the United States, “a milestone in one of the longest standing diplomatic relationships in United States history.”
It recognizes Morocco’s support, under King Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdullah, for the US during its war of independence, which was followed by the ratification of the US in 1787 of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, also known as the Treaty of Marrakech, establishing formal diplomatic and commercial relations between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.
That Treaty remains “the longest unbroken diplomatic relationship in United States history,” the resolution recalls.
Morocco then offered the Tangier American Legation to the US in 1821, the first American diplomatic property and a “lasting symbol”.
The resolution also highlights Morocco’s centuries-old history of religious coexistence, “including the protection of Jewish communities,” as well as the Kingdom’s cooperation with the US to counter terrorism in addition to military coordination.
It recalled that Morocco is the only country in Africa that has a free trade deal with the US and that Rabat is a signatory to the Abraham Accords, engaging in diplomatic efforts to ensure regional peace.
