Burkina Faso, Gabon, Niger, and Mali welcome Morocco-led dialogue initiative at AU

Burkina Faso, Gabon, Niger and Mali- which have experienced coups in recent years and have been sanctioned by the African Union- welcomed the informal talks led by Morocco’s presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council to facilitate dialogue on their political transition issues.

In separate letters to Morocco’s foreign minister, the four countries thanked Morocco for its leadership and crucial role to help them in this context of transition.

They also recognized Morocco’s pivotal role in fostering dialogue within the African Union in order to ensure peace, security, and sustainable development in Africa, in line with the policies of King Mohammed VI.

The landlocked countries and Gabon recognized Morocco’s act of solidarity and its support for the brotherly countries to overcome their political transition challenges.

Committed to promoting African unity, Morocco, as AU PSC Chair, convened these consultations in line with the Council’s mandate, particularly Article 8, paragraph 11, which calls for informal consultations with concerned parties as needed.

The goal was to strengthen dialogue with politically transitioning states, listen to their needs, and collaboratively explore ways to promote stability, peace, and a return to constitutional order, paving the way for their full reintegration into the AU.
