Morocco defeats Tanzania, edges closer to securing 2026 World Cup berth
Morocco has put a foot in the 2026 World Cup after its 2-0 win against Tanzania, in a qualifiers game in Oujda Tuesday.
Tanzania showed resilience in the face of the Atlas Lions’ push in the first half, before Moroccan center back Nayef Aguerd broke the deadlock in the early minutes of the second half. His goal was followed by a penalty spot shot by Real Madrid rising star Brahim Diaz.
With this win, the Atlas Lions widened the gap at the top of the standing in their group with 15 points, followed by Niger with 6 points.
Africa’s qualifiers will resume in September with two more rounds of matches and conclude in October with another double set of games.
The nine group winners all qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The four best runners-up advance to a playoff which offers the opportunity for one more place at the finals in North America.
