Morocco, UN Women sign MoU to strengthen women’s economic inclusion in fisheries
The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in Morocco and the Crédit Agricole du Maroc Group signed, on Wednesday in Agadir, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance financial education and economic inclusion for women working in the fisheries sector.
The agreement, signed on the sidelines of Halieutis fair, aims to promote and encourage the economic empowerment of women in the fisheries sector, in line with the royal directives and the strategic objectives of the “Halieutis Plan”.
Under this agreement, both parties plan to support women fishers in the regions of Tétouan, M’diq, and Martil, facilitating their access to management tools, financing, and markets. This initiative seeks to enhance their participation in the local economy and contribute to the development of sustainable fisheries value chains.
Through its Center for Studies and Research (CERCAM), Crédit Agricole du Maroc will provide women fishers with access to its financial education program, which plays a central role in this partnership. The training sessions will also help strengthen their financial management skills and raise awareness about the responsible use of bank credit.
The agreement also includes measures to encourage and promote the organization of women fishers into cooperatives, economic interest groups, or networks.
This collaboration contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 on gender equality, SDG 10 on reducing inequalities, and SDG 14 on the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources.
