Cyclone Chido kills 94 in Mozambique

At least 94 people have been killed in landfalls in Mozambique following the devastating Cyclone Chido, the country’s disaster management agency said.

The cyclone, with winds reaching 260 km/h and heavy rainfall, has also injured 768 individuals and affected over 622,000 people in various capacities

The northern provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula were particularly hard hit, with significant damage to homes, schools, and healthcare facilities.

The IMF plans to revise downwards its 2024 economic growth forecast due to the impact of the cyclone and post-election civil unrest.

The same storm has hit the archipelago of Mayotte leaving 35 dead. Mayotte is one of France’s poorest overseas territories.
