Chile supports political solution to Sahara within framework of Morocco-proposed Autonomy Initiative

Chile reiterated, through the voice of its Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren Stork, “constant support for the process led by the United Nations towards a just, pragmatic, lasting, realistic, viable, definitive and mutually acceptable solution to the question of Western Sahara, within the framework of the initiative presented by Morocco to the United Nations in April 2007.”

This came in a joint statement issued Wednesday at the end of a meeting in Rabat between the Chilean Foreign Minister and his Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

Chile emphasizes “the centrality of the United Nations in the political process and reaffirmed its support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756, dated October 31, 2024”, and “values the serious and credible efforts made by the Kingdom of Morocco to advance the process towards a political solution,” the joint statement pointed out.

Van Klaveren Stork, who is on a working visit to Morocco, told the media after the meeting that the positive ties between Chile and Morocco boast “great potential” for upgrading bilateral cooperation.

“We are exploring the possibilities of bilateral cooperation and all the potential it brings for relations between the two countries,” Van Klaveren Stork underlined.

In this context, Van Klaveren Stork pointed out that his talks with Bourita focused on Moroccan-Chilean relations in the economic field, in particular the revitalization of the bilateral Joint Commission on Trade and Investment.

“The idea is to further explore the opportunities available to strengthen economic bilateral relations,” he said, emphasizing that the two parties maintain a fruitful political dialogue with many areas of convergence.

During his visit to the Kingdom, Alberto Van Klaveren Stork took part in the “Congress of the Future”, organized by the Moroccan Parliament Dec 17 – 18, in collaboration with the “Fondation des Rencontres du Futur”, and the Chilean Chamber of Deputies and Senate.

Chile’s top diplomat highlighted that the Future Congress is a space for reflection founded in Chile eleven years ago, and now enjoys international prominence.

Chile was represented at the “Future Congress” by a high-level delegation.
