Senegal: Power struggle intensifies as Parliament hangs in balance

Senegal has entered a crucial phase of political maneuvering as parties vie for control of the national assembly in the upcoming November 17 legislative election. The contest represents a critical test for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s reform agenda, following his decisive victory in the recent presidential election.

The dissolution of parliament last month set the stage for an intense campaign season, marked by elaborate rallies and nationwide political caravans. Faye’s Pastef party seeks a parliamentary majority to implement its ambitious 25-year development strategy, which promises economic diversification and expanded employment opportunities.

However, an unexpected alliance between former ruling parties poses a significant challenge to Faye’s agenda. The coalition, uniting the political forces of former presidents Macky Sall and Abdoulaye Wade, commanded a substantial majority in the previous assembly with 106 of 165 seats.

Adding complexity to the political landscape, Pastef has chosen to campaign independently rather than forming traditional coalitions, though it has recruited some former allies of the previous administration. The race also features participation from additional opposition groups led by former Prime Minister Amadou Ba and Dakar’s mayor Barthelemy Dias.

Political analysts view this election as a crucial indicator of public support for Faye’s reform program, particularly given his decisive presidential victory. The outcome will determine the government’s ability to implement its proposed economic and social reforms effectively.
