Mauritania-Senegal: Production of the “Grande Tortue Ahmeyim” gas field planned for early 2025

Mauritanian Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Mohamed Ould Khaled, has announced that the extraction operations from the joint gas field with Senegal, designated as the Grande Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA), are projected to start in early 2025.

During his address at the inaugural Mauritanian-Senegalese Economic Forum in Dakar, which commenced earlier this week under the theme “Economic Integration in Light of the Energy Transition and the Role of the Private Sector”, Ould Khaled disclosed that the GTA project is currently over 95% finalized.

The minister conveyed a positive outlook regarding the project, indicating that the first commercial consignment of gas is anticipated to be exported in the first quarter of next year. This pivotal achievement represents a significant advancement for both nations, as the GTA project is set to augment their energy portfolio and stimulate economic development within the region.

Ould Khaled underscored that the bilateral cooperation between Mauritania and Senegal transcends the GTA initiative, accentuating ongoing collaborative endeavors across diverse sectors, including energy, water resource management, agriculture, and trade. This comprehensive partnership aims to strengthen regional integration and foster a more interconnected economic framework, ultimately yielding mutual benefits for both countries.

The Grande Tortue Ahmeyim gas field, strategically located along the maritime boundary between Mauritania and Senegal, lies at a depth of 2,850 meters and possesses substantial potential. The gas reserves within this field are estimated at approximately 25 trillion cubic feet, establishing it as one of the most significant hydrocarbon discoveries in the region in recent years.

The investment accord for the gas field was formalized six years ago, laying the groundwork for this landmark project, which is poised to become a cornerstone of the energy sector for both nations. As the global economy transitions towards cleaner energy modalities, the successful development of the GTA project is expected to not only address local energy requirements but also position Mauritania and Senegal as influential players in the international energy landscape.
