Moroccan team shines at 31st African Mathematics Olympiad
The Moroccan national team has secured first place in the 31st African Mathematical Olympiad, held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg August 10 to 20.
According to a statement by the Ministry of National Education, the Moroccan team scored a record-breaking 201 points, surpassing the previous highest score in the history of the Olympiad. Algeria came in second with 186 points, followed by Tunisia with 133 points.
On an individual level, Moroccan competitors won three gold medals and three silver medals. Yasine Kmouh from Casablanca-Settat region earned a perfect score of 42/42, securing a gold medal. Adam Mehdan from Souss-Massa region and Sami Moussaoui from the Oriental region also won gold medals with scores of 35/42 and 33/42, respectively.
The Moroccan Ministry of Education extended its congratulations to the medalists, their mentors, and families for their outstanding contributions to the country’s success.
This triumphant achievement underscores Morocco’s growing prominence in mathematics and education on the African continent.
The competition involved 27 countries each fielding teams of six students. Participants sat through two rigorous four-and-a-half-hour exams.
