Mauritania’s accession to the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) is a well-deserved recognition of its role as a player of stability in the region, said Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.

“This is a well-deserved recognition in view of Mauritania’s role, under the leadership of president Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as an actor for stability in the region and its positive role on a range of issues on the African continent,” Bourita told the Mauritanian news website “Sahara Media”, on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.

“Pursuant to the high instructions of HM King Mohammed VI, Morocco supported Mauritania’s bid, in view of the neighborly ties and solid bilateral relations between Morocco and Mauritania,” Bourita said.

He noted that the Mauritanian president knows that he can rely on Morocco’s support to make this presidency a success.

Taking over the rotating presidency of the African Union from the President of the Comoros Azali Assoumani on Saturday, President Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani said “I am deeply grateful and honored by this distinction, but I am fully aware of the magnitude of the responsibilities that ensue, particularly in a pervasively fragmented and increasingly challenging context, not only facing our beloved continent but also the entire world.”
