Spain: Seizure of 1,500 kilograms of cocaine in a joint operation with Morocco
The Spanish police successfully intercepted a vessel carrying over 1,500 kilograms of cocaine off the coast of Gran Canaria. The intercepted boat, which was carrying 64 bundles of illicit substances, was apprehended, leading to the arrest of three individuals of different nationalities.
As part of a joint operation, agents from the national police and the Guardia Civil seized over 1,500 kilograms of cocaine in waters near the coast of Gran Canaria by intercepting a semi-rigid boat and arresting the three crew members.
Through collaborative surveillance and vigilance, and with information provided by the General Directorate of Surveillance of the Moroccan Territory (DGST), it was identified early in the morning on January 12, 2024, that an inflatable boat intended to access the coast of Gran Canaria near the Arinaga coastline. The Guardia Civil patrol boat Río Órbigo spotted the mentioned boat, initiating a pursuit that resulted in its arrest and boarding.
After the boarding, the three crew members were apprehended, and 1,564.5 kilograms of cocaine, distributed in 64 bundles, were seized.
The 64 bundles of cocaine and the arrested individuals were transported to the Port of La Luz in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the drugs were unloaded and weighed, totaling 1,564.5 kilograms. They were then transferred to the Las Palmas Command for custody.
The investigation and the arrested individuals were handed over to the Telde court, where detention was ordered for the three individuals.
This operation is part of the joint efforts of the police forces and positive relations with the General Directorate of Surveillance of the Moroccan Territory (DGST) to prevent drug trafficking.
