Libya bent on bringing Libyan prisoners back home – Justice Minister

Libya’s Justice Minister, Halima Ibrahim indicated Sunday October 1st the North African country is very determined to ensure all Libyans detained abroad are sent home to serve their prison sentences, ‘Libya Observer’ reports.

H. Ibrahim made the announcement on Facebook in the wake of a prisoner swap agreement signed between Libya and Italy, on the sidelines of the UN Palermo Convention’s 20th anniversary against Transnational Organized Crime.

The deal will enable prisoners to serve their sentences in their country of origin, with each case evaluated individually, said the minister, who doubles as Chair of the National Human Rights Committee and Chief of the Committee for Libyan Prisoners Abroad.

She said Tripoli also seeks to sign similar agreements with other European and Arab countries.

The deal signed with Italy is subject to approval by the Italian Parliament through a specific ratification bill.
