Taqa Morocco plans 1 GW of green energy by 2030

Taqa Morocco SA, a leading energy company in Morocco, said on Wednesday it plans to develop 1 gigawatt (GW) of wind and solar projects by 2030 to support the country’s energy transition goals.

The company’s CEO Abdelmajid Iraqui Houssaini told Bloomberg that Taqa Morocco SA is also looking into investing in desalination projects to tackle the water scarcity problem in Morocco, which has suffered from droughts in recent years.

The company aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its capacity from 10 percent to up to 50 percent by 2030, he said.

Taqa Morocco also plans to reduce its carbon footprint by at least 25 percent by 2030 and use emission-reduction technologies in its coal-fired plants, Houssaini said.

He also said that renewable energy is more cost-effective and eco-friendly for desalination processes, adding that the company ambitions to become a leading developer of water resources in Morocco, using its existing expertise and portfolio in the energy sector.
