Djibouti to host first IGAD Summit since 2019 from Monday

Djibouti is the venue from Monday June 12 for the 14th Ordinary Assembly of Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Heads of State and Government, the first ever summit since 2019.
The summit will bring leaders and officials of various countries namely Kenya, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. The U.S., Japan, China and the European Union will also send representatives.
The gathering will discuss regional issues including IGAD’s response to the region’s endeavors including the crisis in Sudan.
Sudan has slid since April into war between army chief Abdelfattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who leads a paramilitary force. The meeting is also expected to review the progress of the peace process in South Sudan.
Prior to the Djibouti meeting, members of the regional organization signed last year in Khartoum – Sudan, an agreement on the free movement of people. The last regional IGAD Summit was held on 29 November 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
