Five dead in landslide in Côte d’Ivoire

Five people were killed Sunday in a landslide in the popular Commune of Yopougon of the Ivorian economic capital Abidjan washed by heavy rains.
“On Sunday June 11 at 03H11 mn, the 4th Yopougon brigade company was alerted about a landslide in Yopougon’s millionaire district, at the height of Saint Louis junior secondary school in Cité 3 Cocotiers. At the scene, a landslide caused 5 deaths”, the national fire service, Groupement des Sapeurs pompiers militaires (GSPM), said in a communique.
Abidjan recorded a torrential rain on Saturday night to early hours of Sunday. The rain also battered some outskirts of the business city. The country, like most countries along the Gulf of Guinea, is going through a raining season that started in March and will run through July.
In a separate report, 15 children have died since January until June 6 as result of rain falls, local media “Abidjan.Net” reports, citing the Observatory for Solidarity and Social Cohesion (OSCS).
The observatory in a statement indicated that four children were washed away, two killed and two injured by lightning, four died when their homes collapsed or a wall collapsed on them, four drowned and one girl was electrocuted.
