Morocco’s King congratulates Erdogan on re-election as President of Türkiye

King Mohammed VI has congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election as President of Türkiye, wishing him success in his continuing efforts to lead the Turkish people towards further progress and prosperity.

The Monarch has also lauded the two countries’ fruitful cooperation thanks to the shared willingness and strong determination to strengthen bilateral ties in all sectors.

In his message of congratulations, the Sovereign expressed his keenness to continue working with Erdogan to consolidate further the special ties existing between Morocco and Türkiye in various fields, meeting the aspirations of the two brotherly peoples and strengthening solidarity between the countries of the Muslim Ummah.

After having secured another five years, President Erdogan now faces a host of domestic challenges in a deeply divided country, from a battered economy to pressure for the repatriation of Syrian refugees to the need to rebuild after a devastating earthquake.

Inflation in Türkiye hit a staggering 85% in October before easing to 44% last month. The overwhelming victory of Erdogan in the provinces hit hardest by the Feb. 6 earthquake came despite criticism that the government’s response was slow and ineffective.

In his victory speech, Erdogan said rebuilding efforts would be a top priority for his government. According to the World Bank estimates, the earthquake caused $34.2 billion in “direct damages”, equivalent to 4% of Türkiye’s 2021 gross domestic product.
