UNHRC: NGO holds Algerian regime accountable for human rights violations in Tindouf Camps
The NGO for Economic & Social Development has called in Geneva on the Algerian authorities to put an end to the sufferings and human rights abuses committed on its territory by Polisario armed militiamen in Tindouf camps.
Addressing on Monday the ongoing 52nd session of the Human Rights Council during the Universal Periodic Review of Algeria, the representative of the NGO said Algeria has a moral and legal responsibility to protect rights of Sahrawis sequestered in the Tindouf camps, located in Southern Algeria, stressing that the Algerian authorities remain fully responsible for the abuses perpetrated by the Polisario separatist group in these camps in accordance with international law.
Thus, “Algeria should accept and implement the recommendations adopted by the UN Human rights Council,” said the NGO, urging the Algerian regime to honor all its international commitments and prevent human rights violations in both Tindouf camps and across the country.
The non-governmental organization has pledged to continue monitoring, documenting, and reporting to all UN bodies the human rights violations perpetrated in these camps wherein the Sahrawis are held against their will and deprived of their basic human rights including the rights of movement, association and expression.
They also suffer extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances and all forms of torture, rape, human trafficking while children are used as soldiers. These violations have been confirmed by the UN Human Rights Council in its latest report.
