Morocco tells UN Envoy autonomy is only political solution to Sahara issue
Morocco has reiterated its position to the UN envoy Staffan de Mistura that autonomy under the kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is the only solution to the regional conflict over the Sahara.
This came during talks on July 5 in Rabat between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and de Mistura.
“The Moroccan delegation also expressed Morocco’s attachment to the political process of round tables in line with resolution 2602, which called for a political, realistic, feasible and lasting solution based on compromise,” Morocco’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
King Mohammed VI has affirmed in a speech in November 2021 that autonomy was the exclusive political solution to the Sahara conflict.
UN resolutions have described the autonomy plan as a serious and credible proposal.
De Mistura’s visit to Morocco came at a context of increasing support for Morocco’s autonomy plan.
The US, most of the Arab World and Africa, and many powerful players in the EU have all supported Morocco’s autonomy initiative.
