Morocco sets up new field hospital in Casablanca as Covid-19 expands

A new field hospital was set up in Casablanca as coronavirus cases spike in the economic capital, one of the worst hit cities in the Kingdom.

Moroccan authorities have built field hospitals and extended existing ones such as in Marrakech where a surge of cases strained health infrastructure.

Both Casablanca and Marrakech as well as Tangier and Fez are Morocco’s most affected cities with the coronavirus.

On Monday morning, cases stood at 52349, including 888 deaths and 36343.

The rise in infections has pushed the government to order distance learning for public schools, shut most affected cities and tighten enforcement of mask wearing and precautionary measures.

The economic toll of the pandemic is expected to worsen as Morocco waves another complete lockdown to deal with a surge in cases.

Over 500,000 have already lost their jobs due to the pandemic and the economy is expected to contract by 5% this year.
