Tunisia: President Saied woos Qatar’s Emir to fund projects in Tunisia
President Kais Saied said Monday that he presented to visiting ruler of Qatar Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani several projects that Qatar can contribute to finance.
These projects include Kairoun hospital complex, according to press reports.
Emir Tamin began Monday a two-day visit to the North African country, the first visit since March 2019, when Tunisia hosted the Arab League summit.
The two leaders also discussed regional issues including the crisis in neighboring Libya and have both agreed to push for peaceful solutions.
Qatar is backing the UN-sponsored Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli which has been defending its seat from UAE-backed retired Gen. Khalifa Haftar.
The Qatari ruler is the second world leader to visit President Saied since he ascended to power in October. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made late December an unannounced visit, which aimed at getting Tunisia’s backing for Ankara military intervention in Libya on the side of the GNA.
