UN: Morocco votes UN against Ending U.S. Embargo on Cuba, Supporter of Algeria-Backed Polisario Militias

Morocco has voted at the UN General Assembly against ending the U.S. economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba, supporter of the Algerian military regime and its Polisario terrorist separatist group.

Last year, Rabat had voted for resolution calling for lifting the embargo imposed by Washington against Havana, hoping that Cuba would review its position and stop supporting the enemies of Morocco’s territorial integrity. But Havana did not course and ignored the Moroccan diplomatic gesture.

This year, the North African Kingdom voted against the same resolution and
backed its American ally and embargo imposed against Cuba. The United States, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Ukraine also voted against the resolution,

The text passed by 130 votes in favour to 17 against, with 25 abstentions. Last year it was adopted by 165 votes to seven, with 12 abstentions. The 193-member UN General Assembly has adopted the resolution annually for more than three decades, except for 2020 during the COVID pandemic, to little effect.

US Ambassador to UN Mike Waltz said “There is no blockade”. He pointed to more than $876 million in US exports to the island in the first eight months of 2026, as well as shipments from Canada, Spain, Mexico, China, Russia, the European Union and UN agencies.

The country’s wealth had not vanished, Mr. Waltz said, but had “changed hands” from ordinary Cubans to a ruling elite. He accused the military-run business monopoly of hoarding resources.

A vote against the resolution, he told delegates, was “the only thing standing between the communist kleptocratic regime and another propagandistic victory at the expense of the Cuban people.”

US officials say the punishing sanctions are necessary to upend Cuba`s communist-run government, which the US calls a “corrupt dictatorship.”
U.S. congressman Carlos A Gimenz thanked Morocco for taking a stand at the UN against Cuba’s murderous communist dictatorship. “Your courage sends a powerful message: The free world must stand united against tyranny and oppression” he said in a comment posted on his X account.
