Switzerland Considering Cooperation with Morocco on Renewable Hydrogen for Energy Security

Switzerland is considering boosting technical cooperation with Morocco on renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels, according to a report issued by the Swiss Federal Council.

The North African Kingdom has been identified by this European country as a priority partner for technical cooperation in renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels to bolster its the long-term energy security.

The move aligns with Switzerland’s national hydrogen and Power-to-X strategy focusing on expansion of clean energy supply chains abroad.

The Swiss report, prepared with support from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), outlines how Swiss institutions—universities, research centers and clean-tech companies—could engage with Morocco in joint studies, training programs and technology…

Morocco looks forward to building an economic and industrial sector around green molecules, particularly hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol, to consolidate its energy transition, cut greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the decarbonization of partner countries.

According to experts, the North African Kingdom has exceptional potential in renewable energy sources, which combined with its expertise will provide momentum to the green hydrogen development in the country. The goal is to use green hydrogen production to promote its economy and strengthen energy security.

Green hydrogen production in Morocco will add value to renewable electricity production. The demand potential in European economies represents an opportunity to export green energy.

Morocco’s green hydrogen ambitions continue to gain international recognition, with both the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the OECD highlighting the country’s huge potential in their latest reports.

The IEA’s latest Global Hydrogen Review places Morocco among Africa’s top renewable hydrogen prospects. The country boasts the continent’s lowest projected production cost (USD 3.2/kg), world-class solar and wind resources, and the largest phosphate reserves globally, creating a compelling case for domestic green ammonia production.

Morocco’s 2021 hydrogen strategy targets between 415 to 905 kt of renewable hydrogen by 2030, backed by the “Offre Maroc” investment framework.

Meanwhile, the OECD Steel Outlook 2026 points to Morocco’s green hydrogen strategy as an important driver of industrial decarbonization. Morocco has earmarked around one million hectares for integrated green hydrogen projects, while experts highlight the potential of renewable hydrogen to reduce emissions in the fertilizer industry and hard-to-abate sectors such as steel.
