U.S. President Donald Trump has reaffirmed his country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in a message addressed to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day. In the message, President Trump stressed that Washington recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and considers the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative to be the only basis for resolving the dispute, said the Royal Office in a statement.
According to the statement, Trump wrote: “The United States is clear: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, and we support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.” He added that “any other path would only prolong the status quo and is unacceptable…
This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to push toward that goal.”
In the message sent on the occasion of the Kingdom’s celebration of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day, President Trump extended his congratulations to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, praising the strength of the longstanding ties between the two countries. He noted that this year marks the 250th anniversary of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco, describing the relationship bond as one built on trust and mutual respect.
On political and security matters, the U.S. president highlighted Morocco’s role in promoting regional stability, describing King Mohammed VI’s wise leadership as a cornerstone of stability. He also commended the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding the security of both Americans and Moroccans. Trump further emphasized Morocco’s role within the framework of the Abraham Accords and reaffirmed the two countries’ determination to continue working together to strengthen security across the Sahel region.
The message also addressed the prospects for economic cooperation between Rabat and Washington. Trump said that King Mohammed VI’s vision for growth opens new prospects for prosperity for both countries’ peoples, and economies.” In this regard, he said he has instructed the U.S. administration to work on strengthening economic and social development with Morocco, including in the Sahara region.
The U.S. president further noted that American technology and innovation will continue to support Moroccan projects in the 250 years ahead, with a focus on strategic sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense, as part of efforts to deepen the two countries’ economic and investment partnership.
Trump concluded his message by reaffirming the United States’ commitment to ushering in a new phase of cooperation with Morocco, stating: “Together, we will build a new era that puts the interests of our two peoples first.” According to a statement from the Royal Cabinet, this underscores the shared determination of both countries to expand their political, economic, and security partnership.
