The Arab League and Sudan have begun preparations for a comprehensive reconstruction plan aimed at rebuilding the country’s transport infrastructure and supporting economic recovery after years of conflict.
The initiative, announced in Khartoum on July 27, 2026, will prioritize smart and sustainable transport systems as a key component of Sudan’s post-war reconstruction efforts. The country’s transport networks, including roads, railways, Ports and aviation facilities, have suffered extensive damage, disrupting movement and humanitarian operations.
Secretary-General of the Council of Arab Economic Unity, Mohammed Ahmed al-Ni, said the Arab recovery framework would focus on three areas: humanitarian support, economic stabilization and long-term infrastructure development.
The announcement was made during the three-day Sudanese-Arab Smart Transport Forum, which brought together government officials, regional institutions and private sector representatives to explore investment opportunities and partnerships.
Sudan’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Saif al-Nasr Al-Tijani Haroun, presented strategic projects to potential investors, calling for greater cooperation with Arab financial institutions and companies to modernise the country’s transport system and restore key infrastructure.
