Morocco’s Royal Gendarmerie has seized more than three tons of cocaine in an operation off the coast of Tarfaya, foiling an international drug-trafficking attempt, Moroccan media reported.
Forces from the regional command of the Royal Gendarmerie in Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra thwarted the trafficking attempt, seizing more than three tons of cocaine in what authorities describe as one of the largest such hauls in the region’s fight against international drug networks.
According to available information cited by le360, the operation was carried out based on precise intelligence that detected suspicious movements at sea.
Investigations found that inflatable boats had retrieved a cocaine shipment from a merchant vessel for delivery to the Moroccan coast, the media said.
The goal was to smuggle the drugs into the country for distribution through an international trafficking network, it said.
Gendarmerie forces intercepted the boats before they reached shore, seizing the entire shipment and shutting down the smuggling operation, it said.
