Tunisia’s General Transport Federation under the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) on Sunday, 12 July 2026, called on workers in the non-regular public transport sector to continue operations and reject a planned nationwide strike scheduled for Monday, 13 July 2026.
The federation’s position came as transport operators prepared for a general strike involving individual taxis, shared taxis, tourist taxis, rental vehicles and rural transport services across Tunisia. The strike was expected to run from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm on Monday.
In a statement, the UGTT transport federation said protecting workers’ rights and preserving their achievements required unity within the union movement and responsible trade union action. It also urged authorities to safeguard its members from any harassment or attacks related to their union activities.
However, the National Transport Federation of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) maintained its support for the strike, saying the action would continue until the Ministry of Transport fulfils commitments, particularly those concerning a review of transport tariffs.
The disagreement has exposed divisions among Tunisia’s transport sector representatives, with unions taking different positions on whether to suspend services or continue pressure on the government through industrial action.
