Stratfor: Morocco’s OCP Shifts Strategy to Overcome Geopolitical Disruptions

Morocco’s OCP Group is diversifying sulphur suppliers, pivoting to Triple Superphosphate (TSP) production and investing in domestic green ammonia to reduce sulphur import reliance, according to a report issued by Stratfor, a leading U.S. geopolitical intelligence platform.

To further secure supply chains, the world’s largest phosphate exporter is counting on regional blending facilities to hedge against geopolitical disruptions and logistical delays in key markets.

Despite controlling 70% of the world’s phosphate reserves, OCP relied on foreign inputs like sulphur and ammonia to process raw rock into commercial fertilizer.

The war in the Middle East and the shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have prompted the Moroccan state-owned company to adopt a new green-energy-driven strategy to secure its supply chain, underlined Stratfor in its analysis.

In addition to diversifying sulphur sourcing away from the Middle East, and boosting domestic green ammonia production to achieve energy self-sufficiency, the OCP is protecting its operations from water scarcity with desalination projects and ensuring compliance with European environmental standards to secure market access.

To shield itself against global shipping chokepoints and energy market fluctuations, OCP Group is implementing a $13 billion green industrial strategy designed to transition the company into a carbon-free fertilizer producer while eliminating its dependency on volatile imported inputs.

This strategy not only protects OCP Group from geopolitical shocks, but also allows the kingdom to securely feed over 400 global clients, with significant operations in South Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Moroccan fertilizers have become vital to the United States because the U.S. domestic supply of phosphate is no longer sufficient to sustain American agriculture, making Morocco a cornerstone of U.S. food security.

This strategic importance was underscored on June 29, 2026, when U.S. President Donald Trump issued an emergency proclamation suspending import tariffs on Moroccan fertilizers, saying access to Morocco’s vast resources is critical to protecting the American food supply.
