Libya adopts long-term water security strategy to tackle scarcity and climate pressures

Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah on Tuesday has approved Libya’s National Water Security Strategy 2026–2050, marking a strategic shift towards long-term planning in response to growing water scarcity and climate challenges.

The plan outlines a comprehensive framework to improve water management, enhance institutional coordination and promote sustainable resource use.

Dbeibah described water security as a cornerstone of national stability and development, emphasising the need to transition from reactive crisis management to forward-looking governance.

The strategy prioritizes investment in modern technologies, stronger regulatory frameworks and scientific planning, while encouraging conservation and expanding partnerships with the private sector and international stakeholders.

Officials say the initiative aims to secure water resources for future generations and reinforce water security as a critical pillar of Libya’s long-term stability and economic development.
