UNHRC: NGOs Call for Human Rights Protection in Tindouf camps & Laud Historic UNSC Sahara Resolution 2797

NGO “Promotion of Economic and Social Development” has called on the international community to take urgent actions for the protection of the human rights in the Polisario-controlled Tindouf camps, southern Algeria.

In a statement made Monday at 61st session of the Human Rights Council convening in Geneva, NGO representative Aicha Duihi urged UN human rights agencies to use their leverages to get access to Tindouf camps, conduct a transparent census of the Sahrawis held in these camps and guarantee their fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of movement.

With the absence monitoring mechanisms, the sequestered Sahrawis in Tindouf, especially children and women, continue to suffer physical, psychological and sexual abuse, ill-treatment and exploitation.

The NGO affirmed that the protection of fundamental rights in Lahmada camps is a legal and moral obligation under UN Charter and relevant international conventions.

Ms. Saadani Maolainain, representative of OCAPROCE International and Ms. Gajmoula Boussif, Head of Sahara Observatory for Economic and Social Development, have applauded in Geneva the adoption of resolution 2797 by UN Security Council, endorsing the Autonomy plan in Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty.

Ms. Saadani said the Moroccan Autonomy offers just and realistic solution, guaranteeing political, economic and social rights under Moroccan sovereignty in accordance with the principles of the United Nations.

Ms. Gajmoula highlighted Morocco’s cooperation with the international human rights system and the impressive socio-economic development in Moroccan southern provinces, saying the Autonomy plan guarantees fundamental rights to all Moroccan Sahrawis, including those held in Tindouf camps.
