Sahara: Belgium Reiterates Support for Autonomy Plan under Moroccan Sovereignty

Belgium has reaffirmed support for Morocco’s Autonomy plan offered for the Sahara under the Kingdom’s sovereignty, saying the plan is “the most serious, credible and realistic basis” for achieving a just and lasting political solution to the Sahara regional conflict.

The Belgian position was voiced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot following a meeting he held Monday in Rabat with Moroccan FM Nasser Bourita.

The Belgian official said his country’s standing on the Sahara builds on the position expressed in the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025 recognizing the importance of the Sahara for Morocco and its national unity. Maxime Prévot said he intends to act accordingly at the diplomatic and economic levels.

Maxime Prévot recalled in this connection that the Belgian Ambassador in Rabat will soon be invited to visit the Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives, such as visits by Belgian companies and the organization of trade fairs by the three regional agencies.

Regarding the extension of consular coverage for Belgian nationals residing in the Sahara and for Belgians traveling in the region, he reiterated that Belgium’s Consulate General in Rabat is competent for the entire Kingdom of Morocco without regional distinction, including the Sahara region.

Rabat and Brussels have also expressed readiness to advance strategic partnership based on strong political dialogue, economic cooperation and close consultation on regional and international issues of common interests.

The two sides praised bilateral political dialogue, driven by renewed trust and expressed commitment to enhance further coordination to keep pace with the evolving strategic priorities of the two countries.

They pledged to encourage investment and partnerships in high value-added sectors, including the energy transition, sustainable infrastructure, green economy and industrial innovation. Morocco is a gateway to the African market while Belgium is a strategic European hub.

Morocco and Belgium have reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, respect for international law and negotiated political solutions to regional crises. They pledged to coordinate stands within international forums, particularly on issues related to security, climate and development.
