Belgium endorses Morocco’s autonomy plan

Belgium has described autonomy under Morocco’s sovereignty as the basis for a political solution to the Sahara issue.

The announcement was made in a joint declaration signed by the two countries’ foreign ministers, marking a significant shift in Brussels’ position and signaling deeper bilateral cooperation.

Aware of the centrality of the Sahara issue to Morocco, Belgium considers, that autonomy is “the most appropriate, serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a political solution,” according to the joint statement.

Belgium affirmed that it will act “from now on, on diplomatic and economic levels, in line with this position.”

Bourita welcomed the move, describing it as “a clear recognition of the realism and legitimacy of the vision championed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI for a definitive settlement of this regional dispute.”

Belgium’s endorsement adds momentum to a growing international trend of support for Morocco’s proposal, which has already been backed by numerous countries across different regions.

Just during the past couple of days, Morocco gained the support of Poland and Cambodia for its national cause, while Paris reiterated steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

Analysts say the momentum reflects a convergence toward pragmatic approaches prioritizing dialogue, stability, and regional cooperation.

This momentum comes as the UN Security Council is expected to endorse by the end of this October a draft resolution supporting Moroccan autonomy plan as the ONLY feasible solution to the Sahara conflict.
