Libya to hold municipal elections in 51 councils on August 16, HNEC confirms
Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) has announced that municipal council elections for a second group of 51 municipalities will be held on August 16. The group comprises councils whose mandates have expired and newly formed municipalities.
According to the HNEC, polling stations will operate from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In preparation, the Commission has disqualified 60 individual candidates and four full electoral lists for failing to meet endorsement requirements outlined in the electoral regulations.
The HNEC acknowledged the challenges encountered in reaching this stage and reaffirmed its commitment to implementing electoral laws transparently and fairly. It called on security agencies to ensure a safe and secure voting environment for all participants.
As the electoral silence period begins on August 15, the Commission has warned candidates against violations and vowed strict legal enforcement. Furthermore, it appealed to monitoring organizations to maintain neutrality and objectivity to uphold the integrity of the democratic process.
