Three fatalities mark first day of Egypt’s 2025 senate elections
Egypt’s 2025 Senate elections began on a somber note as the National Elections Authority (NEA) confirmed three deaths on the first day of voting. Judge Ahmed Bendary, Executive Director of the NEA, revealed at a press conference this Monday that the deceased included the principal of Kafr Hamad School in Sharqia, who died while on duty, a female voter in Fayoum, and a polling station secretary in Sharqia—both of whom reportedly suffered fatal heart attacks. The electoral process, which spans two days, is being overseen by 9,500 judges and monitored by accredited media and observer organizations to ensure transparency.
Despite the tragic incidents, voting continued across the nation, with preliminary results expected on August 12. Should a second round be necessary, Egyptians abroad will cast their votes on August 25–26, while local voting will take place on August 27–28. Final results are scheduled to be released on September 4.
The NEA reiterated its commitment to a smooth and credible electoral process, highlighting the importance of judicial oversight and institutional coordination during this critical democratic exercise.
