Syria expresses thanks to King Mohammed VI for decision to reopen Morocco’s embassy in Damascus

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani conveyed his country’s thanks and gratitude to King Mohammed VI for his decision to reopen Morocco’s embassy in Damascus.

In a press statement following talks in Baghdad Saturday with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, Syria’s top diplomat hailed relations between the two countries as being “very good.”

“We thank HM the King and the Moroccan government for their interest in enhancing these ties, which we aspire to elevate to a distinguished level, particularly in the areas of economy and investment within the Arab world.”

During the talks, Morocco’s Foreign Minister confirmed the decision announced by the Monarch in the speech delivered at the 34th Arab Summit held in Baghdad on Saturday.

In his speech, the King announced the Kingdom’s decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus, which was closed down in 2012. This “will contribute to opening up broader prospects for the historical relations between our countries and our peoples,” the King pointed out.
The Monarch described the move as a reaffirmation of Morocco’s support for the promising course of action in the country and steadfast backing for Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty, as well as a gesture of solidarity with the aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, security, and stability.

“The Kingdom of Morocco reaffirms its unwavering, historical position set out in the letter I sent to my brother, HE President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, namely that we stand by and support the proud Syrian people as they seek to fulfil their aspirations for freedom, security, and stability and to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty,” the King said in his address before the Summit.

As part of the implementation of the royal decision, Bourita announced that a technical delegation will conduct a visit to Syria next week to assess the preparations for the embassy’s reopening, which will serve as a communication and coordination channel in various fields.

Al-Shibani on his part announced that a technical team will be dispatched to Morocco to oversee the reopening of the Syrian embassy in Rabat.
